Did you know that:

Balsa (Ochroma lagopus) is a species of tree in the woolly subfamily (lighter than cork), found in the forests of South and Central America and the Antilles and Ceylon. The tree grows up to 15 meters, the leaves are egg-shaped and heart-shaped, and the flowers are pollinated by bats ! Depending on the location (cross-section of the trunk) there is variation in hardness, the closer to the center the softer. It was used as a filling or insulating material in the construction of houses (in America, of course). It was also used in the construction of gliders and airplanes. The famous British Mosquito of World War II was made largely of sandwich composites using balsa.
