Epidian® 5

One hundred percent solvent-free, colorless epoxy resin, whose primary applications are:

  • bonding of wood, metals and glass, stoneware, plastics (except PE and PP)
  • formation of epoxy-glass laminates
  • flooding and impregnation of various materials including electronic components

The resin takes the form of a viscous amber-colored liquid and is characterized by:

  • minimal shrinkage during curing
  • ability to cure at room temperature
  • excellent adhesion to most materials such as metals, glass, ceramics, wood, etc.
  • good mechanical properties and resistance to many chemical agents such as oils, greases, diluted lyes and acids
  • resistant to short-term exposure to temperatures up to 80⁰C
  • excellent dielectric properties

The resin is hardened when the appropriate amount of hardener is added. For the above applications, PAC hardener is recommended at a ratio of 100 parts by weight of resin to 60-90 parts by weight of hardener, depending on the desired physical characteristics of the product. A higher amount of hardener results in a more flexible polymer. The amount of hardener must be within the specified values, and within this range, the amount of hardener does not affect the curing rate.
Gelation time (pot life) 20⁰C sample 100g ca.180 minutes. The first stage is the initial curing, it is achieved after about 6-8h , in the second stage after 72 hours the degree of curing is about 80-90%. Complete curing takes 7-14 days. This process can be accelerated by applying higher temperatures after the first stage.
It is not recommended to add thinners or solvents to the product. In order to reduce the viscosity of the product, the resin container can be placed in a water bath at 60-80⁰C before adding the hardener. The low temperature will increase the viscosity of the resin.

PAC hardener
Compositions of epoxy resins with PAC Hardener are used for joining parts subject to deformation, such as:

  • for bonding thin metal sheets
  • bonding rubber to metal
  • as modified popular adhesives for everyday household applications
  • in compositions for pouring components in electrical engineering and electronics

PAC hardener is used to cure liquid epoxy resins. This hardener causes an increase in the elasticity and impact strength of the composition for this reason it is used for joints subject to deformation, such as in boatbuilding for joining wooden or polyester-glass laminate elements, for joining rubber to metal, thin sheets, plywood, and for flooding components in electronics.
PAC hardener is a liquid polyamide hardener with brown color and relatively low reactivity. The weight ratio of PAC hardener to resin can be varied over a wide range to regulate the reaction rate and properties of the cured plastic. Compositions richer in PAC hardener are more flexible and resistant to impact, but less hard and less resistant to elevated temperatures. For example, in the case of Epidian® 5 epoxy resin, 60 to 100 parts by weight of PAC hardener can be used per 100 parts by weight of the resin. The addition of hardener above 70 parts by weight results in an increase in elasticity.

For other resins, the proportions are as follows:

  • epidian® 4, 5, 6, 52, 601, 607, 634, 6011 resins by weight with PAC hardener 60-100
  • epidian® 53, 57, 61, 450, 505 resins by weight with PAC hardener 50-80

As soon as the hardener is added to the resin, the curing process begins and there is a certain amount of time left to use the mixture before it cures (open time). This time depends on several factors: temperature, amount of mixture, etc., and will vary in individual conditions. PAC hardener belongs to the group of slow-reacting hardeners, as a rough guide we can assume for the mixture of Epidian® 5 + PAC at room temperature 180 minutes. This is followed by an initial cure in another 6-8 hours to reach a cure of about 80-90% after 72 hours. Complete curing takes 7-14 days. This process can be accelerated by applying higher temperatures after the first curing stage.
