















What the Ford T was to automotive transportation, the Piper J-3 Cub is to sport aviation. Of course, there is a crucial difference: Mr. Ford used to say: "You can have a Ford T in any color as long as it's black," while Mr. Piper's motto said: "You can have a Piper Cub in any color as long as it's yellow." Between 1937 and the United States' entry into the war, more than 3,000 J-3s were produced; with the advent of military orders that required replacing yellow with olive green, the production rate increased to one L-4 Grasshopper (as the Army designation was) every 20 minutes. And hundreds of them are still flying today....
